About the Department
The South Franklin Township Vol. Fire Dept. is responsible for Fire and Rescue coverage for South Franklin Township and Green Hills Borough. Some of the major facilities located within the township are the Washington County Airport, the Goodridge Armory (National Guard), Joe Walker Elementary part of the McGuffey School District and the Lone Pine Country Club in Green Hills Borough.
The South Franklin Township Vol. Fire Dept. has grown over the years. Starting with the first pumper, a 1940 Ford purchased used from Grantsville, MD in 1952. It was housed in the township garage, until the three bay fire station was built on a piece of property donated to the department. This building has been modified and expanded over the years, to the current four bay, two deep garage that can house six trucks.
Currently the department has five pieces of fire apparatus.
1. Engine-32: 2013 Toyne, 1500 GPM Pumper, w/1,000 gallons of water.
2. Rescue-32: 2001 HME 1500 GPM Pumper/Rescue w/Battery Operated Rescue Tool and Lifting Air Bags, w/500 gallons of water.
3. Tanker-32, 1997 New Lexington Ford 2,500 gallon Tanker
4. Brush Truck-32, 2006 Ford F350 4x4 w/skid-mount tank and pump, w/280 gallons of water.
5. ARFF Truck, 1991 Oshkosh T-1500 airport crash truck
In 1983 the department built the SFVFD Social Hall and in 1992 expanded it to the current social hall. The current building can seat 400+ guests for wedding receptions, social functions and 800 guests for fund raisers. The social hall has two stages, bar facilities, fountain soda system, an ice machine, available ATM, and projector with 164” diagonal image. The Social Hall is available to rent for business conferences, weddings, fundraisers, banquets and other social events.
The SFVFD currently has a 25 member active roster, which along with the firefighting duties, the members participate in meetings, work details at the station, in station fire training and at outside training facilities, fundraising and public service. We conduct a Fire Prevention Program each year for the students and faculty at the Joe Walker Elementary School. We participate in activities Parades, Memorial Services, and Battle of the Barrel competitions to build the bond of Brotherhood and Camaraderie with our members and other firefighters.
Ever ready to provide the best in fire service protection for South Franklin and surrounding communities.
